Recreation on the Sulphur River

The Sulphur River is one of Northeast Texas' best-kept outdoor secrets. Rising at the confluence of the North Sulphur and South Sulphur rivers, it winds through the bottomlands of Red River, Lamar, and Fannin counties before joining the Red River of the South. For property owners with access to this corridor, it offers year-round recreation that is hard to match.

Fishing the Sulphur

The Sulphur River supports populations of largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish. Bank fishing and wading are popular along the sandy stretches, and the slower pools hold fish even during the hot Texas summer months. River Crest Lake, a 1,375-acre off-channel reservoir about 7 miles southeast of Bogata, provides additional fishing opportunities for those who prefer still water.

Wildlife and birding

The river corridor is a magnet for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, feral hogs, and a variety of waterfowl. The dense canopy of mature hardwoods and pines along the riverbanks creates ideal habitat. Birders will find songbirds, raptors, and wading birds throughout the year. The property at TBD PR 5040 & 5041 has direct Sulphur River access from the larger tract, making it a prime spot for nature observation.

Fossil hunting

Ladonia Fossil Park, located just across the Sulphur River near the town of Ladonia, is one of the most accessible fossil sites in Texas. Visitors can find shark teeth, stingray barbs, and other Cretaceous-era fossils in the exposed creek beds. It is open to the public year-round and makes a great day trip from a base camp in the Mustang Creek community.

Kayaking and exploration

During periods of moderate water flow, the Sulphur River is navigable by kayak or canoe. The tree-lined banks, sandy points, and occasional wildlife sightings make it a peaceful paddle. Water levels are variable, so check conditions before heading out, but the reward is a quiet stretch of river that few people ever see.

Hunting seasons

Red River County falls within one of Texas' most productive deer hunting zones. Archery season typically begins in October, with general rifle season following in November. Turkey season runs in the spring. For landowners with their own acreage, the opportunity to hunt your own property without competing for public-land access is one of the strongest arguments for ownership.
